Short Description of Instrument |
The Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test - 4th Edition (EOWPVT-4) is an individually administered instrument that evaluates an individual's knowledge of English Speaking vocabulary. The EOWPVT-4 assesses an individual is ability to name, with one word, objects, actions, and concepts when presented with color illustrations. The test targets the ability to understand the meaning of words spoken and name what is depicted on a test plate without context. (Frauwirth et al., 2018)
The EOWPVT-4 is norm-referenced and designed to be used with individuals between the ages of 2 years, 0 months to 18 years, 11 months. The examiner during administration shows the examinee a series of pictures depicting actions, objects, and concepts. The examinee is tasked with naming the illustration presented with their answer recorded in the EOWPVT protocol. (Frauwirth et al., 2018)
Users & Applications:

Comments/Special Instructions |
The EOWPVT-4 is co-normed with the ROWPVT-4. Like the EOWPVT-4, the ROWPVT-4 is individually administered however unlike the EOWPVT-4, the ROWPVT-4 evaluates an individual's ability to match a spoken word with an image of an object, action, or concept.

Scoring and Psychometric Properties |
Scoring: Raw score is the number of correct responses up to the ceiling item (last item administered). All responses below the basal item (the lowest item administered correctly) are considered correct. Subtract the number of errors from the ceiling item to obtain the raw score.
Psychometric Properties: High reliability (internal consistency, temporal stability) and validity (content validity, construct validity, criterion related validity). Positive, though weak, relationship with verbal measures of cognitive ability.
|
Rationale/Justification |
Strengths: Good assessment of naming vocabulary across the lifespan. Gives age equivalents for expressive/naming vocabulary level.
Weaknesses: At times, the test duration is lengthy. A study by Furlong and Teuber (1984) found that there was no evidence that the EOWPVT measures a unique dimension of vocabulary abilities.
